IUNited was founded in the Fall of 2024 with the mission to bridge the gap between students and their surrounding communities. The organization emerged after a year of careful planning and brainstorming, born from the belief that Indiana University Northwest lacked an outlet to address the needs of both students and underserved communities. Recognizing the challenges faced by pre-professional students in networking and accessing meaningful volunteer opportunities, IUNited was created to simplify and accelerate the process of making a real impac
The surrounding communities of Northwest Indiana, particularly Gary and Merrillville, face numerous challenges that demand attention. By offering support through service work, IUNited aims to provide compassionate care, foster growth, and create lasting change. The organization believes that the time and resources of students can play a vital role in addressing these challenges, and that everyone, regardless of career aspirations, can contribute to improving the community.
The founder’s personal experiences growing up with limited resources and the impact of community-driven programs like the summer book bus and food programs sparked a passion for service and volunteerism. These early encounters with kindness from others left a lasting impression and created a deep-seated desire to pay it forward. Over time, the founder witnessed firsthand the disparities within healthcare, particularly among elderly patients who often faced isolation. This reinforced the understanding that small acts of service could make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
With a firm belief that service is a powerful tool for change, IUNited was established to channel the energy, resources, and time of students toward creating lasting impact in the community. The organization is dedicated to empowering students to use their skills and compassion to address the pressing needs of Northwest Indiana, contributing to a brighter future for all.
