Recognizing dedication, consistency, and a genuine heart for service

Luke was chosen as July’s Member of the Month for his unwavering dedication to helping others. Despite having work shifts on the same days as our volunteer events, he has made the effort to attend every summer outing and meeting. Since first hearing about IUNited earlier this summer, he’s been actively engaged and committed to our mission.

In a time when many join extracurriculars to check off academic or professional boxes, Luke stands out for being here purely out of the goodness of his heart. His passion for giving back makes him an invaluable part of our team.

What’s your name, major, and year at IUN?
Luke Baczkowski, Actuarial Science, Sophomore

Where are you from (if you feel comfortable answering)?
Hobart, IN

What’s one fun fact about you?
I enjoy crocheting things for my friends and family.

IUNited Involvement

How did you first hear about IUNited?
I had seen an Instagram post about a cleanup in Gary through the club reposted on a friend’s story.

What made you decide to join?
I wanted to join because I really wanted to help make a difference in the community and I love to volunteer.

What has been your favorite IUNited event or volunteer experience so far?
My favorite volunteer experience was helping to reorganize the Humane Indiana PAWS resale store.

How has being part of IUNited impacted you personally or professionally?
Being a part of IUNited has impacted me personally since I’ve been able to meet great people with shared mindsets about helping out those in need and giving back to the community.

Reflections & Advice

What’s one skill you’ve learned or strengthened since joining IUNited?
My communication skills have improved by being able to connect with the people in charge of the volunteer events.

What advice would you give to new members?
Have fun with every event you go to and know no matter how small something you think you’re doing is, it has a huge impact.

Why do you think others should get involved with IUNited?
I think others should get involved with IUNited because being able to help other people is such a fulfilling experience and being able to give your time is a very valuable gift.

Just for Fun

If you could plan any IUNited event, what would it be?
I would like to plan an event where we can volunteer at a soup kitchen or anything cooking related since I enjoy making food.

What’s your go-to comfort food or drink during a long study session?
My comfort food after a long study session is definitely ice cream.
