Today, two passionate IUN students—Isiah and Marwah —stepped up and showed out at the Think B.I.G. Gary community event, despite the cold, windy, and rainy weather. 🌧️ Their presence helped represent Indiana University Northwest in a day full of unity, energy, and hope for the city of Gary.
Think B.I.G. (Believe in Gary) is a powerful initiative launched by Mayor Eddie D. Melton that focuses on community beautification and empowerment. The goal? To inspire pride in Gary and encourage residents to be part of the change—whether that means helping with neighborhood cleanups, reducing blight, or supporting local transformation efforts. The turnout today proved just how many people believe in that mission.
While IUN does not currently have an official partnership with Think B.I.G., it was still a proud moment for us to be out there helping alongside other volunteers and city leaders. Events like these offer a valuable opportunity for students to connect with their community, learn from public service in action, and give back in a meaningful way.
A highlight from today was when Marwah got to share IUN’s student-led efforts with someone involved in the event—only to later find out it was actually Mayor Eddie D. Melton himself! As the 22nd mayor of Gary and a lifelong resident, Mayor Melton has been at the forefront of efforts to revitalize the city through civic engagement and collaboration. It was an unexpected but meaningful moment that made the experience even more special.
We also want to give a big shoutout to Isiah Wilson, who woke up early, powered through the wet and cold, and gave his all to help the cause. Volunteers like Isiah are the reason these events are successful—his dedication didn’t go unnoticed.
We’re hopeful this is just the beginning of IUN students stepping up and showing out for Think B.I.G. and for Gary. We may not have an official partnership, but we have a shared passion for positive change—and that’s where it all starts.
