Volunteer of the Month: Isiah Wilson

About the Volunteer

Can you tell us a little about yourself—what inspired you to choose biochemistry and pursue a pre-med/pre-professional track?
I picked biochemistry because that was what I was advised to do. I’m going into pre-med because I want to help make a difference, and I believe that working in the medical field would be a better fit for me compared to some other fields I’ve seen in the past.

What motivated you to get involved with volunteering, and how did you first hear about IUNited?
For medical school, it was a great idea to round myself out with things beyond academics. Dr. Fielder helped me reach out to IUNited as a way to connect with others who share a similar mindset.

Balancing Volunteering & Academics

As a full-time student, how do you manage your time between coursework, volunteering, and other commitments?
In the past, I couldn’t, and it caused me to struggle with all of them. But now, with the support of family, friends, and mentors, I focus on three main things at a time. I set other things aside until one of those three commitments is completed, making room for something new.

Have you faced any challenges in balancing school and volunteering? If so, how have you overcome them?
Like I mentioned earlier, trying to do too much can lead to failing everything and everyone. I was able to talk with Marwah and figure out a way to make up for the hours that I missed.

What advice would you give to other students who want to volunteer but are worried about time management?
Reach out to the people around you. They can be a great source of comfort, encouragement, and advice. Also, don’t be afraid to talk with Marwah about your strict schedule—she always finds a way to help us out.

Experience with IUNited

What has your experience with IUNited been like so far?
It has been a great confidence booster. It has also allowed me to meet new people and have meaningful conversations about my future goals.

How has being part of IUNited helped you grow, both personally and professionally?
It has helped me discuss and refine my future goals with experts and peers in the field who have gone through the same journey I’m on. It has also helped me learn how to prioritize different aspects of my life.

What has been your most rewarding volunteer experience with IUNited?
The most rewarding experience was the puppy adoption event in Crown Point. I was able to hang out with dogs and talk with some very kind people.

Impact & Future Goals

How do you think volunteering has helped you develop skills for your future career?
Volunteering has significantly improved my confidence, communication skills, and ability to empathize with others. It has shown me different ways to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

Why do you think volunteering is valuable for students in any pre-professional field?
It’s a great way to develop time management skills and build empathy, which is essential in any profession.

What would you say to students who are considering joining IUNited but aren’t sure if it’s for them?
Talk with someone you trust and ask yourself, “Is this something I want to do?” That will help you decide if you’re ready to take this step.

Any final thoughts on what volunteering has meant to you?
IUNited is a great organization and has helped me grow in many ways. I enjoy working with them and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.
